The suspect at the center of a five-hour standoff is now in custody after exiting his apartment peacefully.
Police and tactical units had been trying to negotiate with the suspect, who was believed to be armed, since being called to the scene in regards to a disturbance. A woman and 6-year-old boy were also inside the apartment during the standoff. Both are fine.
Officers at one point made contact with the woman, who told police by phone that she is not being threatened. The woman is believed to be the male suspect's girlfriend.
Police tell 11 News it was not a hostage situation.
Based on a witness account, though not confirmed by police, the situation began as an argument between the man and woman at the Cheyenne Vista Apartments, located on Crestone Lane near Motor City. The child was reportedly standing with the couple during the fight.
The witness told 11 News that she called police around 7:40 a.m. Thursday after seeing the man pull out a gun during the argument. The witness said that when the woman threatened to call police, the man allegedly pointed the gun at his head and asked her if it "looks like I care?"
Police tell 11 News they believe alcohol may be involved.
The surrounding apartments were evacuated during the standoff, displacing up to 24 residents. At this time, the evacuations have not been lifted, but are expected to be lifted soon.
In addition to facing charges for Thursday's incident, police say the suspect, identified as Julian Gutierrez, had unrelated warrants for theft and robbery in Pueblo.
Police say since the woman chose not to come out, she is facing child abuse charges.
