GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) -- A 65-year-old man who pleaded guilty to strangling his wife at their home in Golden faces 48 years in prison under an agreement with prosecutors.
David Wayne Reathman entered the plea Friday in Jefferson County and is scheduled for sentencing Oct. 2.
Authorities found the body of 70-year-old Barbara Reathman on March 25 after a family member called police to check on her. David Reathman surrendered to police three days later, after trying to take his own life by staying outside in the freezing mountains.
Police say Reathman told investigators he killed his wife because he was terminally ill with lung cancer and had been struggling financially because of a gambling addiction. Police say Reathman exaggerated the severity of his lung cancer prognosis.
David Reathman was initially charged with first-degree murder but that was dropped.
