A Springs man faces child abuse and attempted murder charges after police say he assaulted his girlfriend and harmed her 9-month-old child during an argument.

According to police, 29-year-old Mark Burch began fighting with his girlfriend Saturday night while driving on North Carefree Road. He refused to stop as his girlfriend began demanding to be let out of the truck.

Burch eventually stopped at a dirt lot, where police say he "forcefully removed" his girlfriend from the vehicle and shoved her to the ground. The woman managed to get her 9-month-old out of the truck and began yelling for her younger sister, who was also in the vehicle to run and get help. As the victim started to walk away carrying her child, Burch allegedly strangled her to the point of unconsciousness. Police say that when she came to, she was lying underneath the truck with her infant child lying on the ground nearby, bleeding from the head. The truck engine then revved up, so the victim quickly got herself and her child out from under it, and fled the scene with her sister.

The three made it to a nearby bar, where the woman called police. After interviewing the victim, officer tracked down Burch and arrested him in charges of attempted second-degree murder, felony child abuse and misdemeanor child abuse.

The woman and her child were both hospitalized with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The infant remains in the hospital with a skull fracture. The 9-year-old sister was unharmed.
