Police say a tragic freak accident led to the death of a Canon City man.
Sixty-year-old Richard DeGroot was run over by the dump truck he was working on after it started suddenly. Police say the one-ton truck rolled backwards and crushed DeGroot's torso.
More than 15 minutes passed before his wife, wondering why the truck had been running for that long, came out to check on him. DeGroot was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident happened Tuesday afternoon on the 1200 block of South 9th Street in Canon City.
