A man at the heart of a fraud investigation has pleaded guilty.
Greg Ehnes, owner of Springs Transmissions and Automotive, is accused of fraud, theft and other illegal business practices. He pleaded guilty to theft, criminal mischief and theft from an at-risk adult in a hearing Friday morning.
The allegations first came to light when 11 Call For Action volunteers started hearing from a number of disgruntled customers last year. Customers reported their vehicles being held at the shop for months. Some customers told Betty Sexton that when their car was due to be ready, there would be new, fishy-sounding problems with it.
Yvonne and James Humes told Sexton that when they demanded that their vehicle be returned, problems or not, Ehnes would refuse unless they gave him $1,500 in cash.
Sexton went to the shop herself last year and spoke with Ehnes about the accusations. He told her at the time that the fraud allegations were completely untrue.
His attorney told 11 News Friday that what happened in the plea hearing was "acceptable." She said Ehnes feels bad and is very apologetic to the victims.
Our reporter in the courtroom, however, says he didn't hear Ehnes say "I'm sorry" once.
