In this 11 Call For Action Alert, a local woman says she got several checks in the mail. They looked like they were from Publisher's Clearing House, but it turned out to be a scam.

Gladys Morgan says it sounded real, and she wanted to believe that she had really won.

"I was kind of excited when I opened the letter. Here I found out that there was six checks in there for $400 dollars each. And I had different items I could buy with those checks," said Morgan.

She called Publisher's Clearing House directly to ask about it, and that's when she found out it was a scam.

"They said, 'We don't send anything,' that if you win anything, you don't have to pay nothing for it," said Morgan.

These fake checks can look real. Crooks use high quality printers and scanners to make them look legitimate, and sometimes they can even fool a teller.

Remember, if you get a check in the mail from someone you don't know, do not try to deposit it. If they turn out to be fake, you will owe the bank any money you take out.

The Federal Trade Commission says to keep in mind that a real sweepstakes won't make you pay a fee or buy anything as part of your prize. And there's no reason to give your credit card number in this kind of situation.
