Getting rid of the leaves that fall off our trees into the yard may seem like a simple household chore, not something that could be detrimental to the city water quality if neglected.
But according to city officials in Colorado Springs, that's exactly the sort of problem that could arise if those leaves are not removed. Officials say excess leaves can drift out of yards into the streets and eventually end up in stormwater inlets, causing flooding and ultimately impacting the water quality. Additionally, if the drains get clogged, it costs a lot of money for the emergency maintenance to get it cleaned up.
With these concerns in mind, the city is beginning a big week of leaf recycling starting Monday, Nov. 19 and running through the end of the month. Citizens can bag raked leaves and take them to the following drop-off location to be recycled:
Hancock Salt Shed (1202 E. Caramillo St.)
Staffed Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
For those not interested in dropping off their leaves, the city recommends mulching the leaves yourself to be used as compost in your yard.
