A group of horses escaped from their home early Friday morning and were roaming Highway 85/87 when officers say one was hit and killed by a car.
The accident happened around midnight on the stretch of roadway between Duckwood and Comanche Village, near Fountain Creek Regional Park. Fountain police say that's a dark area, and believe the driver probably thought he or she hit a deer. The vehicle left the scene before officers could to talk to the occupants.
Police spent time rounding up the other three horses, and got them all safely back to their owner.
Officers do not have any information about the vehicle. They ask that the driver or anyone who saw the crash contact the police department at 382-8555. No one faces any charges; police just want to check and make sure that no one in the car was hurt in the accident.
