A 60-mile stretch of highway has reopened after a suspicious item found in the roadway was removed.
Highway 50 was closed in both directions from Montrose to Gunnison for three hours Thursday night while crews investigated.
According to Colorado State Patrol, a CDOT worker found a container with unknown contents on a pole in the Dillon Pinnacles overlook area, which is near the Blue Mesa Reservoir on Highway 50. After troopers responded to the scene, they decided to shut the highway down as a precaution to investigate the item further.
HAZMAT crews and the Grand Junction Bomb Squad were then called in to help evaluate. After arriving, they determined that the item was not an explosive or hazardous. It was taken into custody for further testing and evaluation.
Highway 50 was shut down in both directions from 7:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m.
