Highway 24 was shut down for about an hour Tuesday due to the threat of flash flooding.
The highway was closed between Cave of the Winds and Cascade starting around 4 p.m. A strong thunderstorm hit Woodland Park Tuesday afternoon and then moved southeast towards the Waldo Canyon burn scar. With the closure occurring around the start of rush hour, the opened portion of the highway on both sides of Manitou Springs became clogged up with vehicles waiting for the closure to be lifted. After the burn scar ended up dodging the worst of the storm, the highway was reopened just after 5 p.m.
Water levels in Fountain Creek remained high for a few hours after the closure was lifted.
CDOT always closes Highway 24 whenever there is a substantial threat of flash flooding.
