Transportation officials have closed the top part of the highway up Mount Evans for the season.
Touted as "North America's highest auto road," the five-mile segment that leads from Summit Lake to the peak was closed Tuesday morning. The lower portion of the Mount Evans Highway running from Summit Lake to Echo Lake will remain open until early October, weather permitting.
The Colorado Department of Transportation shuts down access to Mount Evans' summit every year after Labor Day as part of an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service. It typically reopens in late spring.
Mount Evans stands at 14,265 feet--making it 154 feet taller than Pikes Peak.
