Gunshots Heard Near Springs High School Under Investigation

On the heels of several reported threats at southern Colorado schools, a shooting near a Springs high school is now under investigation.

The incident happened after hours, and is not expected to impact classes Friday.

According to police, officers were sent to Mitchell High School near Academy and Galley just after 9 p.m. Thursday on reports of shots being heard in the area. Once there, a witness told police a group of people had been arguing in the school's west parking lot, then the witness heard several shots fired. Shortly after, the group left the parking lot in two separate vehicles.

The witness also reported seeing several people possibly involved in the incident running towards a nearby apartment complex.

Police recovered evidence at the scene and searched the neighborhood, but have not found the suspects involved.

There is no suspect information at this time, but one of the vehicles seen in the parking lot is described as a red late 90s Chevy Astro Van with a temporary tag.

If you have any information that can help police locate those involved, you are asked to call CSPD at 444-7000.

A spokesperson with the district tells 11 News they will have increased security at the school Friday.
