Theft Victim Tracks Down Thieves Using Cell Phone

A stolen iPhone helped police to an apartment complex in Pueblo, where they arrested four people and recovered $5,000 worth of stolen property.

It all started Tuesday morning with a car theft on the north side of Pueblo. Several items were stolen, including the victim’s iPhone.

But with some quick thinking, he used Apple’s iCloud service to track the phone's location before calling Police. Within hours, officers were knocking on the doors of a south side apartment complex.

“This is my first experience in doing it this way,” said Corporal Lee Karr with the Pueblo Police Department.

"A cell phone; the GPS function of a cell phone and some software that is available from your cell phone provider is actually what led us here,” said Corporal Karr. "It actually pointed us to even a corner of the building."

Corporal Karr says he is impressed with the phone GPS technology that provided quick efficient results. He says typically police use cell phone towers to pinpoint a general location.

"They use two towers and they are able to find out what point they cross and say okay, it's somewhere within a parking lot distance of this site. As opposed to this GPS enable phone that talks to satellites. It was amazingly accurate,” said Corporal Karr.

So accurate, the GPS signal led police to the doorstep of the thieves. Police got permission to search each apartment in the corner of the building, except one.

"We knew they were inside, they looked out at us, they would not answer the door,” said Corporal Karr.

That’s when police got a search warrant. And inside they found much more than just the missing cell phone.

Police tell 11 News they arrested four people after finding at least $5,000 worth of stolen property and stolen ID cards.

Three males and one female ranging in ages from 20 to 30 were put behind bars.

Investigators believe this bust will help them solve several other thefts.

Corporal Karr says technology is an invaluable crime fighting tool, and encourages everyone who owns a cell phone with GPS capability, to learn how to use it.

“Not every phone may have this, but the ones that do, this could be the end result, that we get it back,” added Corporal Karr.
