A Fort Carson soldier received the Silver Star Medal Monday for saving the lives of 24 others in combat.
Maj. Gen. Paul LaCamera presented Sgt. Andrew Mahoney with the Silver Star for his actions while serving as a member of the brigade commander’s personal security detail during combat operations in Asadabad, Afghanistan, on Aug. 8 of last year.
Mahoney placed his life at risk by intercepting a suicide bomber who was moving toward his patrol.
This was the same incident that claimed the lives of Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin J. Griffin and Maj. Thomas E. Kennedy, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, and Maj. Walter D. Gray, 13th Air Support Operations Squadron.
The Silver Star is the third-highest military combat decoration, awarded to a member of the United States Armed Forces for gallantry in action while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States.
