A Fort Carson soldier died Sunday from wounds he received in December while serving in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense says Sgt. Mark H. Schoonhoven, 38, of Plainwell, Mich., was wounded on Dec. 15, 2012. His unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device.

He was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, where he eventually died of his wounds.

Schoonhoven was assigned to the 32nd Transportation Company, 43rd Sustainment Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson. He was on his third deployment to Afghanistan. His other two were from Jan. 24, 2007 - Mar. 7, 2008 and April 19, 2009 - June 8, 2010.

Schoonhoven received several awards, including the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
