Smoke could be visible around Fort Carson Friday and in the upcoming weeks, as the Mountain Post begins burning debris leftover from a forestry project.

According to Fort Carson, environmental staff with the base will begin burning 250 slash piles, which are branches that accumulated after a forest thinning project. The burning was prescribed in order to reduce the risks of a fire in training areas on Fort Carson.

The base said in a release that they developed a plan to reduce smoke impact by "combining favorable weather conditions with a variety of management techniques designed to keep smoke to a minimum."

The prescribed burning begins Friday and is expected to run through March.
