Former Colorado Republican Gov. John Vanderhoof, a former businessman and bank executive who went on to become governor for only two years, died last week. He was 91.
After serving 20 years in the state House, six of them as speaker, he was elected lieutenant governor for a four-year term in 1970. Vanderhoof was a running mate of Republican Gov. John Love, who won a third term. It was the first Colorado election in which candidates of each party ran as a team, with the voter marking a single ballot for the two.
He became governor when Love left to become a part of the Nixon administration in 1973. Vanderhoof lost to Democrat Richard Lamm in 1974.
