The Waldo Canyon fire is almost fully contained, but neighborhoods near the fire area now face a new threat. Hillsides once protected by vegetation are now exposed, which makes the homes below vulnerable to flooding and debris.
KKTV 11 News Chief Meteorologist Brian Bledsoe says flooding concerns are now foremost in his mind.
“We’re approaching the height of thunderstorm season here in Colorado,” he said, “It’s basically the equivalent of pouring a big ‘ol glass of water right on your tabletop. It just goes everywhere.”
A community meeting was held to discuss the flooding danger on Thursday, July 5, at Centennial Hall. The message was to prepare for the worst but hope for the best. Newly purchased flood insurance policies take 30 days to go into effect.
Homeowners are encouraged to protect themselves by purchasing flood insurance, which is not part of regular homeowner’s policies.
Additionally, anyone observing any clogged drainage is asked to call the Colorado Springs Street Division at 719-385-5934, Manitou Springs Public Works at 719-685-2560 or the El Paso County Public Services Department at 719-520-6891.
If flash flooding does occur, seek higher ground immediately. Emergency notifications may be issued, and phones can be registered for those notifications at www.elpasoteller911.org.
