It took several hours for firefighters to knock down a fire at a Walsenburg home.

Huerfano County dispatch tells us the fire started between 3:30 and 4 a.m. Thursday at a house on the 300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. It burned well into the afternoon.

Cassie James, who lives two doors away, tells 11 News that the man who lives in the home was able to get out safely. She says a neighbor heard his screams for help and called 911.

Firefighters from the Huerfano County Fire Protection Agency and La Veta Fire Protection District responded. At this time, it's not known how much of the home was damaged, or what caused the fire.
