After working through the night and into Saturday, crews have reached 100 percent containment on a grass fire burning in Huerfano County.
The estimated acreage burned has been reduced from 20 acres to just over 13 acres.
The grass fire was first reported at 4 p.m. Friday near a rail line west of La Veta. Huerfano County spokeswoman Lori Cordova says a cause has not been confirmed, but there is speculation that the rail line may have been a factor.
Firefighters from La Veta, Stonewall, Juniper Valley, Boncarbo and Costilla County responded to the fire. Additionally, Cordova says two teens from La Veta assisted as "junior firefighters," meaning they ran errands and got some training in firefighting.
Cordova says at this time, crews from La Veta, Boncarbo and Juniper Valley remain at the scene in "patrol status," which means they are keeping an eye on the fire and working on mopping it up.
