For the first time, we're hearing from the father of a 5-year-old boy who was hit and killed by a car when the two were walking on the sidewalk. The dad was seriously injured.
Five-year-old Ishaq was walking in a safe spot--the sidewalk--when a vehicle barreled over the curb and struck him.
The crash happened in July along Murray Boulevard, just south of Platte Avenue in Colorado Springs.
Raphael Hameed has his right leg wrapped in bandages now. It was partially amputated right after the crash. As he holds hands with his wife he talks to us about the accident that took his little boy.
“I’ll be crying from now until [pauses] if I live another 50 years, I'll probably still be crying the 49th year. He meant that much to me,” explained Hameed.
Five-year-old Ishaq was walking on the sidewalk with his father by his side when police say Xyrhah Goldston sped around the curve, lost control and hit them. Remarkably, Raphael told us he forgives her.
“No animosities on my part. I'm not mad at anybody, I'm not mad at the woman who crashed her car and killed my child, and destroyed my body," Hameed said.
Raphael says this is most painful thing he has ever been through. He wants all drivers to slow down around that curve on Murray Boulevard.
“There are too many children over there that are just a bullseye for a bad driver."
Right after the crash happened we asked the city if anything will be done about that trouble spot. The city engineer says they don't consider it to be a dangerous stretch. They just want drivers to slow down and obey the speed limit.
