Officials with the Colorado State Patrol say one person in a pickup was killed when the vehicle crashed head-on into a school bus near Florissant Sunday morning around 6:40 a.m.

Eight students on the bus were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. There were 52 people, most of them students ranging in age from 15 of 22, on the bus at the time of the crash. They are attending Summit Ministries, a camp located in Manitou Springs. The students were on their way to a river rafting trip in Buena Vista when the crash happened.

"The scariest telephone call you can get is that there's been a bus accident," Summit Ministries President Dr. Jeff Myers said.

The driver of the pickup truck, Glenn Crow, 42, died in the crash. The driver of the bus was not injured.

"The driver of the bus is a very quick thinking person, and she's also a registered nurse and she was my hero in that situation," Dr. Myers said.

The truck was reportedly headed east on Highway 24 when it crossed into oncoming traffic. State patrol says alcohol is being investigated as a possible factor. Toxicology results are expected to be completed within the next six to eight weeks.

"Most of (the student's) questions were about (the pickup truck driver) and about his family and how they might be able to help. Which I think is a great demonstration of their compassion and sense of perspective," Dr. Myers said.

That area of the highway was closed Sunday morning, May 26, until shortly after noon.
