The family of a high school football ref who died over the weekend released a statement to 11 News.

John Whitten died after he collapsed on the field during a football game at the District 20 stadium Friday.

The full statement is below:

We would like to thank all of the staff members from School District 20, the EMTs who responded to the stadium, hospital staff, and football officials who did everything in their power to try and save John. While we are deeply saddened by his untimely death, we find comfort knowing that he was doing something that made him truly happy on Friday night. Thank you to the community who have rallied around us and provided their support during this very difficult time.

He left the world a better place through his volunteerism, philanthropy, and commitment to the community. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to one his favorite charities:

Early Connections Learning Centers, 104 E. Rio Grande St., Colorado Springs, CO

Pikes Peak Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 673, Colorado Springs, CO 80901

Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation, 2550 Tenderfoot Hill Street, Colorado Springs, CO
