11 News is talking to the family and childhood friend of the teen accused of a double murder.
Macyo January was arrested Thursday evening. The 17-year-old is accused of shooting a Fort Carson soldier and his wife.
His sister tells 11 News she thinks January is innocent. She is shocked that he has been arrested for murder. She says he has been in trouble with the law before, but she thought he had changed. She says she doesn't think he is capable of hurting someone.
11 News spoke with January's adopted grandfather. He was very upset, and says January was a bright, young boy who got involved with a bad crowd. He says he is heartbroken his grandson is facing murder charges.
According to a childhood friend, January's parents were involved in drugs and his grandparents raised him. That friend tells 11 News January was friends with people who claimed to be gang members, and he spent a couple years at a juvenile detention center. However, she tells 11 News she never thought he would take someone else's life.
January went to Otero Elementary School and Fox Meadow Middle School. He attended Harrison high School for one year before leaving. 11 News has learned that January had issues with attendance and discipline there.
January will be charged as an adult.
