Hundreds of unused and expired prescription drugs were voluntarily surrendered in Colorado Springs as part of the annual Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

The event aims to curtail prescription drug abuse by giving people means to dispose of unneeded medications in a safe and anonymous way.

Colorado Attorney General John Suthers says prescription drug abuse is a growing problem in the state, with the number of deaths from drug abuse now surpassing the number of deaths related to drunk driving. Colorado currently ranks second in the nation for prescription pain-killer abuse. Seventy percent of those who abuse medications get them from friends and family.

Medications were collected at several locations throughout Colorado Springs Saturday. Tablets, capsules, liquids and all other solid dosage medications were accepted as long as they were not chemotherapy medications.

Medications collected by law enforcement agencies will be properly destroyed.
