Twelve families have been displaced after a fire broke out in a Springs apartment complex Monday night.

Thick black smoke was pouring out of the building as firefighters arrived at the Shannon Glen Apartments on Murray around 10 p.m. Several tenants were trapped on the third floor of the building; the Colorado Springs Fire Department says they were rescued by the first firefighters to get the scene.

Fifty-two firefighters total battled the fire, which was out by early Tuesday morning. Most residents were allowed back into their units by 2 a.m. It's unknown what the extent of damage is to the units belonging to the 12 displaced families.

A few people were sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
