Donations For Black Forest Fire Victims

The recovery process is just beginning for many families in Black Forest. One group of volunteers is trying to make it a little easier.

Rooms and hallways inside the Sundance Mountain Athletic Center are now filled with donations.

"Couches, dressers, bicycles, chairs, I have a great selection of kids toys," said organizer Racquel Garcia."

It's all free for the families who lost their homes in the Black Forest fire.

"If we're able to add a smile to their face, that's amazing," said Garcia.

Garcia is heading up the volunteer efforts. Her 9-year-old daughter came up with the idea, after a few of the girls in her dance class lost their homes.

"I wanted to help them," said Mackenzie Garcia.

"Started with a collection of gift cards. I put a little blurb on Facebook and saw how much we would collect," said Garcia.

It has now grown from just a few gift cards to rooms filled with furniture and clothing.

"I wasn't expecting this much," said Mackenzie.

Volunteers are trying to get the word out for families affected by the fire to come and pick up what they need. In fact, volunteers are canvassing the Black Forest area, passing out fliers to let people know about these donations
.
So far the group has helped a handful of families, and they're hoping to reach hundreds more.

The group is hosting a street fair on Friday, June 28. There will be free food and fun for the kids, and a chance for people to go through the donations and pick out what they need. This is only open to fire victims. It will be from 4-9 p.m. at the Sundance Mountain Athletic Center at 1808 Woodmoor Drive in Monument. They are still accepting donations as well.
