The first frightening call came into 911 at 11:38 a.m. The call came from the Planned Parenthood clinic saying someone was shooting.
Police dispatch tapes reveal the moments the first officers were shot.
"Who is shooting? Stop there! He's shooting at you," a male officer can be heard.
"Please, I've been shot!" a female officer said over the radio.
"241 I've been shot," said another male officer.
Police say the shooter ran into the Planned Parenthood building and was shooting at officers through the front windows.
Just before noon, two officers had been shot.
"It's the blue bench with the window right above is where we last took fire. It's a UCCS officer we're trying to get," explains an officer over the police radio.
That UCCS officer would later be identified as Garrett Swasey, 44, who was killed.
Law enforcement swarmed the area and put surrounding businesses on lock down. Just after 2 p.m. police say the shooter started firing again.
"He just took fire through the window at one of our [Sheriff's Office] guys, he got hit in the leg," an officer can be heard saying over dispatch.
For hours, officers worked to get hostages out of the building.
"We're going to try to cut through the drywall to communicate with any possible people inside so we're not close to that window the suspect is," said an officer.
Around 4:30 p.m. teams were ready to take action against the shooter using a large tactical vehicle they refer to as "Bearcat."
"Bearcat is in position ready to go ... position confirmed. Everybody is away from the Northwest corner where our rounds are going to go," said an officer over dispatch.
Finally, the gunman surrendered at 4:52 p.m.
Here are the dispatch recordings:
"We got no movement on him yet. He's down in the corner and we know that he's there... He's standing up! He's standing up!"
"We have one suspect detained right now."
"He says he's alone."
