Denver Zoo Euthanizes Aging Asian Elephant Mimi

An Asian elephant that had been at the Denver Zoo since 1961 has died.

Zoo officials said Wednesday that Mimi, who was believed to be at least 53 years old, was euthanized Tuesday evening after having difficulty standing and losing the ability to move her trunk.

In recent months, Mimi had refused food and medication but wasn't diagnosed with anything other than arthritis and advanced age. Zookeepers warned the public in late August of Mimi's declining health.

The zoo says Mimi was believed to have been born in India around 1958 before moving to Los Angeles via a private individual. The Denver Post's former secretary-treasurer Helen Bonfils bought and donated Mimi to the Denver Zoo in 1961.

The Denver Zoo still has one female Asian elephant and two males.
