A guided rafting tour became fatal after the raft hit a rough section of river several miles outside Buena Vista Thursday afternoon.
Disaster struck after the group reached the Pine Creek Rapids, considered one of the most challenging sections on the Arkansas River. Authorities say the guide fell from the raft, and the raft continued downstream until it got lodged in a large suckhole. The raft started spinning around and several occupants were thrown out.
The Chaffee County Sheriff's Office says all were able to swim to safety except one woman, who drifted further downstream until a kayaker pulled her to the shore. She was unable to be revived, and died at the scene. She has been identified as 57-year-old Mary Johnson of Dallas.
The victim was on one of Timberline Tours' guided rafting trips at the time of the accident.
