D-49 Investigates Anonymous Tip, Finds No Credible Threat

A possible safety concern at a local school turns up empty, but a note sent home to parents have some of them upset. Most of the parents we talked to were really concerned by the lack of information.

The email was sent to all District 49 parents and some felt it raised more worries rather than put them at ease.

The Vista Ridge High School leadership program had been working with the Colorado Springs Police Department to investigate an anonymous tip left through the “Safe To Tell” program overnight.

It turns out the report was unfounded and investigators didn’t find any credible threats.

The email was sent out to parents at about 1:30 Monday afternoon informing them about this incident.

“Why did they send it out if there was no information," one parent told us.

We've been talking to the school district spokeswoman, who tells us the report was from a student expressing safety concerns at their school -- but didn’t go into further detail.

She says sending the emails is a very common practice and has been done before.

School resource officers and district safety staff members say they will continue maintain a strong presence and monitor the situation.

This is the email sent out to parents today:

Date: Apr 22, 2013 1:24 PM
Subject: District 49 Safety Message for April 22

Good afternoon,

The District 49 safety and security team would like to share with you information about an investigation involving some schools today. Dave Watson, safety and security coordinator, can address any questions you might have: dwatson@d49.org.

The Vista Ridge High School leadership team has been working with the Colorado Springs Police Department, in coordination with other school leaders, to investigate an anonymous Safe 2 Tell report that came in Sunday night.

No District 49 schools have been placed on lock down or secured perimeter. All schools are on normal security status. At this time, investigators have not identified any credible threats.

Following a very thorough investigation, it was determined there was no validity to the report.

We have asked our staff members district wide to maintain a strong presence and vigilance in our buildings throughout the school day.

School Resource Officers and district safety staff members are continuing to monitor the situation and will coordinate with law enforcement as necessary.

Dave Watson
Safety and Emergency Coordinator
