A federal appeals court has upheld the convictions of three inmates convicted in the beating death of another inmate at a federal prison in Florence.

The prisoners were given additional terms of 25 to 40 years. Their appeals were rejected on Friday by the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The three were convicted in 2011 of conspiring to murder Pablo Zuniga-Garcia. Authorities say he was beaten with padlocks attached to belts.

Justin Hernandez was sentenced to spend 40 years in prison after his current 20-year term. A criminal complaint said Hernandez was the leader of a prison gang and allegedly ordered the beating.

Mark Rosalez was sentenced to serve 25 years after his current 10-year sentence, and Juan Martin Ruelas got 20 years.
