Police say a convicted felon likely concocted a story about a robbery to keep himself out of hot water for having a gun.
Springs officers were called to Penrose Main Hospital Tuesday night on reports of a gunshot victim showing up at the ER. The man, identified as Michael Bittinger, had been shot in the hand. When officers interviewed him, they say Bittinger told them he had been shot during a robbery.
But as police investigated further, they determined a robbery never actually happened; Bittinger had instead shot himself in the hand by accident. Further investigation revealed that Bittinger was a convicted felon.
Police tracked Bittinger down the following day and arrested him for possession of a weapon by a previous offender. Officers later found the gun in a nearby home.
