Chris Melcher announced his resignation Wednesday.

He'll be leaving his job as city attorney at the end of January. Melcher has served in that position for just over two years.

He issued a statement Wednesday night citing some good things that have happened while he was city attorney, including the successful lease of Memorial Hospital to UCH and the creation of a medical school campus.

We reached city councilmen Don Knight, who told us Melcher's resignation will definitely remove one of the big hurdles standing between Mayor Bach and the city council working together.

Melcher says he agreed to a two year commitment and now that they have accomplished some goals, it's time to return to the private sector.
