Colorado Springs City Council voted in favor of a ban on panhandling in the downtown area Tuesday.
The council voted 8-1 in favor of the ordinance. The ban takes effect next week.
Anyone caught panhandling in Downtown Colorado Springs will first receive a verbal warning. The next offense is a written warning, followed by fines and possible jail time.
The ban also affects any organization or business soliciting money. Organizations like the Salvation Army would have to get a permit from the city to raise funds.
