Circus Performer Falls In Front of Crowd

A circus performer with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey is recovering after falling 20-30 feet Saturday night during a live performance at World Arena in Colorado Springs.

The accident happened during the 3 p.m. show. The performer was practicing during a routine setup on the double wheel, when something went wrong, according to a circus spokesperson.

Witnesses say he flew off the wheel and fell to the ground. When it was safe, emergency responders transported the unidentified man to the hospital.

The circus spokesperson says he has been released from the hospital. The performer suffered hip and wrist contusions, and will miss the remaining shows in Colorado Springs. The wheel act has been cancelled for Sunday's performances.

Production manager for the circus, Chantal Stringer, says that the performer was outside a wheel that rotates on an axis preparing for an act when he plunged onto what circus-goer John Flores described as a thin piece of padding.

The performer's name has not been released.
