Tragedy struck in suburban Denver Saturday morning after a 2-year-old was killed in a shopping center parking lot.

Witnesses said the parking lot was extremely busy, with people fighting over parking spaces. Somehow in all the chaos, the toddler was hit by a SUV. Investigators believe the driver of the Lincoln Navigator was backing out of a parking space and didn't see the little boy.

The child was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Neither his identity or the identity of the driver have been identified.

The accident occurred at about 10:38 a.m. at the Aspen Grove Shopping Center located at 7301 South Santa Fe Drive in Littleton.

According to one childcare website, nearly 50 kids a week, mostly between the ages of 1-2 years old, are hit by vehicles backing out. At least two per week are fatal. Experts advise parents to never let their children walk or run ahead of them when cars are nearby, and remind drivers to always check their blind spaces and back out of parking spaces slowly.
