Former City Council Member Pleads Guilty To Child Abuse

A former Colorado Springs City Council member has pleaded guilty to child abuse.

Charles Wingate and his wife were accused of leaving their 13-year-old autistic son alone in deplorable living conditions. Police say the boy was naked and in a home containing both dead and living rodents, as well as human feces.

The house was condemned and the boy was placed into protective custody.

Wingate told 11 News at the time that the allegations of abuse were false and that police were blowing the situation out of proportion, but Monday he pleaded guilty in court.

Wingate was sentenced to 24 months of unsupervised probation. If he breaks the terms of his probation, he could then face up to one year in jail.

Wingate's wife, Sharon Starkey, was also sentenced. She pleaded guilty in January and is on supervised probation.
