An intermittent problem with 911 emergency call systems in Colorado Springs is causing some callers to get a busy signal. Qwest, AT&T Mobility and the CSPD Communications Center are working to resolve the problem.
Police say this is happening even though emergency lines are open for calls, and is mainly a problem limited to wireless calls, such as cell phones and Voice Over Internet lines.
The system is not properly connecting the calls to the Communications Center, and emergency call takers are not aware a call has been attempted in these cases.
Callers to the 911 emergency system should not normally receive busy signals.
If all the 911 lines in Colorado Springs are busy, additional calls should automatically transfer to the El Paso County Sheriffs Communications Center, and if all their lines are busy, the calls transfers to the Fountain Police Department.
In these cases, those Communication Centers are able to notify Colorado Springs via alternate methods of the emergency.
