Sometimes it's a robo call. Sometimes it's a person on the other line.
But anytime someone calls you claiming they're with the IRS--it's a scam.
Eva Arnim's daughter thought the number was legitimate.
"She did call...and they got money out of her account," Arnim said.
Her husband recently received one himself.
"He says, 'We just got a call from the IRS; do we owe anybody any money?' and I said, 'No, John, we don't!' He says, 'They left a phone number,' and I said, 'Don't call it!'"
Arnim was among the dozens to call the KKTV newsroom Thursday reporting calls from the IRS. 11 Call For Action investigator Betty Sexton says there may be a reason for the increase in calls.
"We are in the heart of tax season; the scammers know that," she explained.
Glenda Stephens also received a call.
"I listened to it, and I was like, 'No, this is a scam.' I had received a couple of calls before, but I immediately hung up. This is the first time that I've actually had anything like this done where there's a complete recording and a phone number to call back."
The calls can sound authentic.
"The reason of this call is to inform you that the IRS is filing a lawsuit against you. To get more information about this case file, please call immediately on our department 202-407-9795, I repeat, 202-407-9795. Thank you."-Scammer's call to Arnim
"It makes me angry! These people don't work, we work for a living and they go out and scam people," a frustrated Arnim told 11 News.
"My heart goes out to people who fall for this scam, so that's why we've been ringing the alarm bell as loud as we can," Sexton said.
Stephen's advice: "Just be aware, pay attention, don't be in a rush. When you hear the word 'Treasury' or 'IRS,' let that be your trigger to know this is fake."
The IRS concurs. It says it will never call you to demand payment, and if you owe taxes it would have sent you a bill first.
In Colorado, there have been 100 victims who have lost a total of $500,000 because of this scam. If you ever have questions about a suspicious phone call, feel free to call our 11 Call For Action hotline at 457-8211.
