The Capitol Christmas Tree has arrived in Washington D.C.!
As of 9:20 a.m., crews are working to position the tree on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol.
The 73-foot tree has its roots--literally--in Colorado. It was selected in August from several other candidates in the White River National Forest near Meeker, Colo. and harvested Nov. 2. Once on the road, it visited several cities in Colorado, including a stop at the Air Force Academy on November 11.
The U.S. Forest Service has been providing the national Christmas tree since 1970. A different national forest provides the tree each year. 2012 is the third time that Colorado has donated the Capitol Christmas Tree. The other times were in 1990 with a tree from the Routt National Forest and 2000 with a tree from the Pike National Forest.
This year's tree is a 74-year-old Engelmann Spruce.
The tree will be decorated with approximately 5,000 ornaments and will be lit by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, during a ceremony on Dec. 4.
First Lady Michele Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia last week greeted the arrival of the Christmas tree that will be displayed in the Blue Room of the White House. The 19-foot tree arrived Friday by horse-drawn carriage.
