Business Owner Warns of Credit Scam

The owner of Dragon Man's Shooting Range said their business lost out hundreds of dollars thanks to a fake credit card, which to a small business could be a lot of money.

It took Terry Bernstein more than a month to find out she was losing the money, and she's worried that this problem could be a big pain for other businesses.

A month ago, a group of six smooth talking men went into the shooting range, according to Bernstein. "They even offered to pay me an additional $100, they were very generous if I stayed later," Bernstein said. She told KKTV 11 News she did not think twice about their credit card, because they were so eager to spend.

When Bernstein tried to process the credit card it was declined. Bernstein said the customers called their bank, then put the person who they said was the bank representative on the phone with her.

"I get on the phone with who I think is the bank, she tells me how to put the charge through [manually]," Bernstein said. "Believe me, I didn't think I'd be scammed."

Recently, she received a letter in the mail from her credit company. The letter stated that the transaction from that day was not valid, even though she has a receipt with an approval code.

When Bernstein finally called her credit company, a customer service representative pointed out what should have been her big warning. "When I printed out the receipt it actually said ‘offline,’ and he said that that was a red flag right there because that means it doesn't actually go through the system," Bernstein said.

Unfortunately, the transaction request was denied Dragon Man’s has to eat the cost. "You feel a little embarrassed because you don't feel that it could happen to you," she said.

A report has been filed with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
