Burglaries Included Vandalism In Evacuated Neighborhoods

There's a new twist on the crimes popping up about among the homes evacuated during the Waldo Canyon fire. We've learned a number of break-ins weren't just to steal property. Some were simply cruel.

One family 11 News talked to had their young daughter's framed artwork hung on their wall. Vandals broke the frame and tore up the art. The family's bicycle tires were slashed and priceless antiques were smashed.

A significant number of these crimes took place in the Pinon Valley and Mountain Shadows neighborhoods in Colorado Springs. Those homes were left vulnerable while under mandatory evacuation.

"Everybody in this neighborhood and all the neighborhoods in this area were going through so much, and to see that when we returned home is just really disappointing," said Brian Vitulli, a resident.

"Honestly, they didn't steal that much stuff. It was just mostly malicious, vicious, nonsensical violence against property that didn't belong to them," said Bear Wilson.

Their homes are just two of the 37 reported burglaries. 11 News has also learned that at least 28 evacuees' cars were broken into as well. Police are still patrolling neighborhoods in the burn area.

The El Paso County district attorney has also said anyone who committed these crimes will face 24 years in jail for each count if they are found guilty. An anonymous donor has offered a $50,000 reward for information about those involved in this string of burglaries.

If you have any information about the suspects, there is a hotline designated to take calls specifically linked to these crimes. The number to call is 719-385-2222.
