A toddler is being treated for serious injuries after being mauled a pit bull in Commerce City.

Police say the dog was tied up Sunday night when the 19-month-old boy approached to give it a hug. Police spokesman Chris Dickey says dog latched onto his face.

Officers restrained the dog but it continued to fight. It was taken to an animal shelter but officials say the dog died of asphyxiation during the restraint process.

Pit bulls are banned in Commerce City. Police say the attack happened in a parking lot where transients have been camping.

The dog's owner has been arrested and charged with unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog.
