Neighbors stepped in to help animals in potential peril.

A dog and cat were trapped after a fire started at a home on Daredevil Drive in Security. No one was home at the time, leaving the pets without a way to escape.

But a neighbor spotted the smoke and saved the dog.

"Basically [I] grabbed her and just, like, 'Let's go!' She came straight for me, she was just basically following me and I was like, 'Come on, let's go!'" Patricia Perez said.

A man driving by rescued the cat, even giving it CPR.

"It was unconscious and limp, so we took it out and gave it CPR and it came back. It was meowing and purring...somebody took it to the vet," Andrew Davenport said.

Springs and Security firefighters worked together to knock down the fire, which started Monday around 11 a.m. Though it began in the basement, thick smoke could be seen for miles. Images from the home after the fire was extinguished also show substantial damage to the exterior of the home.

Fire investigators are now working to figure out what caused it.
