A student at an Aurora high school is recovering after a gun accidentally went off on his ride home.

Police say the student, who attends Rangeview High School, was in an employee's vehicle about an hour after school let out Monday when the incident occurred. The employee was giving the student a ride home, but they had not left the parking lot.

The employee, who is not a teacher but does work for the school, works a second job unaffiliated with Aurora Public Schools as an armed security officer and had a gun in his car. According to police, he was moving the gun into his glove box when it accidentally went off and struck the student in his leg.

The employee immediately drove the student to the hospital. The student sustained a "significant" injury to his leg and had to have surgery, but police say he is expected to survive.

The employee has been placed on administrative leave, but police say he is unlikely to face criminal charges.
