The California-based Atmel manufacturing plant laid off 140 workers in Colorado Springs Tuesday. That's in addition to 60 employees that were laid off in December of 2012. A spokesperson for the company says it is because of "weak economic conditions".
The company says the plant has been operating between 70 and 80 percent capacity for more than a year now, and the economy has not allowed them to rehire.
Barry Pettis, a former computer programer for Atmel, says "It's really scary, I mean the bills still have to get paid. I dont know what I'm going to do."
Atmel Corporation specializes in microcontrolers, and touch screen technology. In December of 2012, the company employed around 1,300 workers in Colorado Springs.
A spokesperson notes that they are trying to help the workers they lay off find another job, and plan to rehire when the economy improves.
