Liquor Store Owner Thwarts Armed Robbers

Colorado Springs police continue to search for three suspects that they say tried to rob Academy Liquors in broad daylight wearing body armor.

Her son told only 11 News that it was her quick thinking that likely saved her life.

According to police, two of the three suspects entered Academy Liquors, at 1210 North Academy Boulevard near Academy and Galley, at around 9:45 a.m. Saturday, armed with shotguns.

The third suspect waited in the getaway car.

When you a look at the surveillance video, you can see two men armed with shotguns as they rush into the store.

Richard Caldwell's mom had just opened their doors for business.

"It's just a shame, it's around Christmas season and it's very unfortunate," Caldwell said.

As we watch the video with him, we can see his mom watch the men jump out of the car, then quickly lock herself in the office. Less than a minute later, one of the crooks approaches the door.

"She locked herself in the back room because this has happened before, so she has a metal door and it protected her today," Caldwell told us.

According to police both men were wearing ballistic vests under their sweatshirts, which they say is not typical during these types of robberies. After spending a few minutes inside the store, investigators say both suspects left after seeing no one was inside to rob.

The two suspects and a driver sped off in a getaway car. That car is described as a dark colored Toyota Camry with black rims, tinted windows, with a rear spoiler.
