(Englewood-AP) -- Drought is drying up landscaping businesses across the nation as governments restrict the use of water.
President of the Rocky Mountain Sod Growers Association Brian Ridnour says the turf industry in Colorado has laid off 50 percent or more of its 2,000 employees because of the drought.
Even landscapers on the East Coast are praying for hurricane season.
The Palmer Drought Index says 49 percent of the contiguous United States is in moderate to extreme drought.
Nervous municipalities in drought-stricken areas are imposing limits on watering gardens and lawns.
Landscapers say this hurts them unfairly because other industries using water, including car washes, usually don't face the same restrictions. They say landscaping is environmentally conscious.
