Fort Carson crews recovering pieces from a 2009 helicopter crash in Lake County Thursday were surprised when they found a lot more than they bargained for.

Army crews were searching Mount Massive Thursday to recover pieces from a fatal helicopter crash that killed four Fort Campbell soldiers in August 2009. Crews say the pieces that were recovered were small enough to carry out with two hands and with these pieces, they most likely have a complete aircraft, which is important for their investigation.

The real surprise came though, when they located and saved a missing hiker. Fort Carson says the missing teenage girl from Arkansas was separated from her family Wednesday and spent the night in the mountains alone. Her family says they had cell phone communication throughout the night but Search and Rescue was forced to call off their search Wednesday night. While Fort Carson crews were flying a Chinook overhead Thursday, they were able to locate the girl. They dropped down a bucket from the aircraft for her to climb in and were able to safely pull her up into the helicopter.

As for the pieces of the downed helicopter, they've been brought back to Fort Carson and will soon be shipped to the east coast to be pieced back together. Once they rebuild the aircraft, Army officials hope to figure out what caused the crash.

Units from the 4th Infantry Division, 10th Special Forces Group and 182nd Airborne worked together to recover the aircraft.
